The 12 Highest Universal Laws create the perfect playbook for network marketers

On October 23, 2010, my view of life forever expanded when I had the rare opportunity to soar to the edge of space in a U2 reconnaissance aircraft. Because it was a classified mission, I can only tell you that at 70,000 feet you can see two thirds of the state of California. At 80,000 feet you see mapped outlines of America. And at 90,000 feet you tear up, feel like you can reach out and touch the face of God and realize that what matters most is what lasts the longest.

In a sortie that lasted over four hours, I sat in the sounds of silence looking at the breathtaking curvature of the earth, gazing into the endless blackness of space, experiencing an unobstructed view of the universe, and with a sixteen-mile-high perspective on life and leadership, I wondered if we are more than mere mortal beings living on a small planet for a short season.

I realized society’s definition of success is actually distorting our perspective on what it takes to become significant.

When we landed it occurred to me that everything we can take with us when we die I had aboard with me on that aircraft: my education, my character, my convictions and the deep satisfaction that my life mattered — that I made a difference, not just a living.

I had become an eyewitness to the reality that we are all interconnected beings in a world governed by a specific set of universal laws established for the sole purpose of guiding us to achieve a level beyond success. I realized if we are ever feeling bogged down in the minutia of business and life, we need only reexamine our level of commitment to these laws, which will prompt us to look beyond our small bubble and see the sheer beauty, magnificence and endless opportunities that surround us.

And yes, because I’m a professional speaker on my flight home I coined three nuggets of wisdom that consolidated my new and deeper understanding of time, attitude and the art of selling:

Number 1

Today you’ve never been this old before and today you’ll never be this young again. Right now matters which means no matter what your past has been you have spotless future.

You can’t always control what happens but you can always control what happens next.

Number 2

So, if you’re spending your time wondering if the glass is half empty or half full you have missed the point — it’s refillable!

Thinking positively or negatively doesn’t fill up the glass – the pouring does. It’s easier to act your way into positive thinking than to think your way into positive action.

Number 3

Wealth flows through you, not to you which means you can get anything in life that you want when you are willing to help other people get what they want.

Obviously, they collectively remind us to take immediate action – that in two more days, tomorrow is yesterday – but most significantly, they illuminate the fact that everybody, in every industry, in every socio-economic system in the world is in the business of sales. More specifically, we are all in the business of ‘direct sales,’ which is ‘relationship selling,’ which is actually ‘network marketing.’

Mastering Your Playbook

In the world of professional football the NFL quarterback has memorized his playbook and then given what is called a “play sleeve” or “wrist coach” to wear on his forearm. It allows him to always see and know the best play to call in each situation.

As you study and master these laws to the point they become automatic thoughts and behaviors, they become your “play sleeve” or your “wrist coach” that you constantly wear day and night; at home, at work, at play.

Regardless of your personal or professional challenge, leadership or management crisis, or crucial conversation in which you are required to engage, because you have mastered the art of significance and fully comprehend each law you can literally decide in real time which law or combination of laws you need to use to take the situation, conversation and solution from where it is to where it needs to be.

And as you do, remember that not every play is designed to score a touchdown — not every conversation or meeting is designed to close a deal. Oftentimes we need to run a play or two that set up the actual play that scores. Oftentimes we need several interactions and need to work on a combination of laws before we “achieve the level beyond success.” The art of significant network marketing is your newest high performance playbook.

BOTTOM LINE

Although selling using a direct sales trust-building process is at the heart and soul of every human interaction, because a specific industry calls this the time-tested proven formula for network marketing some shun the opportunity to explore its efficacy. My response? So what, and let’s all get over it.

My friend and colleague Simon Sinek said it best: “The goal is not to do business with everybody who wants what you have. The goal is to do business only with those who believe what you believe - so they choose you, not just someone who does what you do.”

To me, I understand this best through my experience as a songwriter where our goal is to have one of our songs go platinum, which means we sell 1 million copies. Over the years I have written hundreds of songs, some of which are so pathetic that I wouldn’t even share them with my own mother. So what keeps me motivated to keep on writing and never sell out or get discouraged? It’s the reality that there are 300 million people in America, which means I can literally tick off 299 million and still go platinum.

Believe in who you are and why you do what you do, and never say never until you go platinum.
